Academy of Faith & Life Adult Bible Study
Camp Chapel has a variety of options for adult Bible study. These courses are offered at different times and days and continue through the year, usually from September through early June. The topics change periodically and are advertised in our church newsletter (the Acorn) and in our church bulletin, both of which can be found on our website.
At this time our on-going study groups include:
Sunday Morning Adult Group – meets Sundays at 9:30 a.m. in Fellowship Hall.
Monday Morning Adult Group – meets Mondays at 11:00 a.m. in Fellowship Hall. This group repeats the information from the Sunday Adult Group.
Band of Brothers – a men’s Bible study group that meets on the first and third Wednesday each month at 7:00 p.m. in Fellowship Hall.
The Band of Brothers meets regularly to study and discuss God’s Word as it relates to real life in order to help them become better Christians and therefore better fathers, husbands, brothers and friends. The Brothers read selected scripture and scripture-based studies and stories and/or watch DVDs then conduct discussions. These discussions often include personal experiences of the participants and provide opportunities for personal growth and understanding of how following God’s word can help improve the outcome of some of life’s problematic situations.
Circle of Sisters – a women’s Bible study group that meets on the second and fourth Wednesdays each month at 7:00 p.m. in the church Conference Room.
The Circle of Sisters meets with the purpose of studying the Bible, developing friendships, and serving our Lord. Through the years, the Sisters have enriched their understanding of the Bible and God, grown tremendously in their faith, and have nurtured a loving camaraderie among themselves. God’s grace has also provided a means of Christian support in time of need, a chance to compare solutions to everyday issues, to socialize, and simply to laugh and have fun together. The sisters have a heart for serving. Their projects have varied from correspondence with shut-ins and reaching out to those in need to their annual wrapping of presents at Christmas for the Gifts of Love ministry.
Film Seminar – the Camp Chapel Film Seminar Series has been a ministry of this church since 2009. The purpose of the seminar is to watch secular movies and then spend a little time talking about them, identifying a Christian theme or idea that each one contains and connecting it to Scripture, as well as discussing each film’s merits as a work of art.
Over the years we have seen motion pictures as diverse as classics like Casablanca (we talked about fidelity and betrayal) and High Noon (we found Jesus in the marshal), modern movies destined to become classics like The Book Thief (we talked about passing on our Christian values to our children) and No Country for Old Men (we encountered dispassionate, detached evil), and quirky films like The Big Lebowski (a movie all about the sin of sloth) and Shaun of the Dead (we celebrated transcendent friendship).
The film seminar meets eight times a year – about once a month from September to May – on a Saturday evening from 6 p.m. to about 9:30 p.m. Each season has a unifying theme, but each movie stands alone – in other words, you don’t need to see the first two pictures to enjoy fully the third. Because of the sophisticated nature of some of the films, you do need to be over 18 to participate.
Look for flyers announcing each upcoming movie selection on this web site, in The Acorn newsletter, or in the Sunday worship service bulletin. If you’re a movie buff, or even if you just like to kick back from time to time and lose yourself in a good flick, come join us!
